Who this is for

Readers comparing a knee replacement across the three systems who want numbers with provenance rather than a slogan. As with hip surgery, our video library does not document joint replacement first-hand, so the China row uses clearly-labelled platform estimates aimed at international patients, next to NHS waiting-list reality, UK private guide prices and the US employer-claims average.

Read the numbers carefully

  • The China row is indicative and platform-reported: it prices international-patient packages with premium Western implants. Domestic patients at public hospitals with domestic implants generally pay a fraction of these figures, so treat the range as a ceiling for foreigners, not a floor for everyone.
  • The US tracker publishes a single combined average for knee and hip replacement — the true knee-only figure will differ somewhat, and 2018 is the latest claims year in that series.
  • For the UK, the meaningful comparison is not cost but route: free NHS surgery with a median national wait of 13.4 weeks and orthopaedics the largest waiting list, or five-figure private surgery within weeks.
  • Recovery is the long tail of this procedure: rehab weeks, physiotherapy, and revision surgery risk span years and borders. Cost is one axis — see our guides before making any decision.
